Smokey Bear represents Wildfire Prevention. The USDA Forest Service currently has many initiatives to aid in the management of dense-growth forests in the western and southwestern United States. When dense-growth forests like these catch fire, the small-diameter trees burn faster and wildfires spread more quickly. Approximately 39 million acres of ponderosa pine forests need thinning of small-diameter trees to reduce the hazard of wildfires. How can you help? When you purchase products from OFFICIAL SMOKEY BEAR LICENSEES, a portion of those proceeds go towards funding the Forest Service Wildfire Prevention Fund. Programs funded include community forest-thinning projects, and to pay for the costs of actual fire fighting. The ultimate goal of this program is to improve the health of our Nation's forests, like the one shown below.

 What is unique about this Smokey Bear Baseball Bat? The wood used to make this baseball bat comes from the forest-thinning efforts described above. Not only is your purchase providing funding support for the Forest Service Wildfire Prevention Fund, but the use of forest thinnings to make these baseball bats is directly funding local forest-community efforts to improve the health of our Nation's forests. Our Official Licensee logo, and a short statement regarding forest-thinning utilization is included on the back side of the bat barrel....
Who are we? This product was developed by a former USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory researcher who studied the utilization of these forest thinnings in various products such as structural lumber, glued-laminated timber, and wood flooring. Click on the report shown at the right to read more about the needed forest thinning, and how the Forest Service is studying the properties of structural wood products made from this material. The more products that can be made from forest thinnings, the more economic incentive there is for local communities to carry out these forest thinning efforts.... and that results in reducing the hazard of wildfires.
